Saving Money on Food

Food is one of our biggest expenses. It's also the one that easiest to adjust. Saving money on food doesn't mean going without or not food that is tasty and good for you. A lot of it just requires a bit of thought and changes of habit.

The most expensive way to eat is to start with a recipe book, decide on a meal, go and buy every ingredient needed, and cook it exactly to the recipe.

Thrifty cooks start at the other end. They start by looking at the ingredients they have and thinking about how they go together, maybe adding one or two ingredients on the way. They keep a set of most used items on hand (or growing in the garden) and often stock up on these when they are on special.

Saving Money on Food Shopping

  • Avoid shopping when hungry or unhappy. You'll be less tempted by fast good and sweet treats.
  • Shop alone. Shopping as a couple or a family adds more temptation. Let the family member who is best at shopping do it.
  • Buy fruit and vegetables when they are in season. They usually taste better then too.
  • Calculate price per unit. Sometimes buying in larger quantities is not cheaper.
