The South Pine River marks Brisbane's northern border between Bald Hills and the commercial and government centre of the Pine Rivers District at Strathpine. The Brendale Industrial Estate provides local employment and picturesque Pine Rivers Park is popular with families and larger groups. Pine Rivers Shire extends to the west and includes urban and rural areas in the Hills District, Samford, Mount Glorious and Dayboro. To the east, is the Bruce Highway and development at North Lakes. The Pine River meets Moreton Bay at Dohles Rocks.

On the Pine Rivers and Redcliffe border is North Lakes, a purpose-built planned community with residential, commercial and light industrial areas.
